It happened: I got into medical school!!- #RTHM

Happy New Year! Welcome to 2021 ndi nkem “my people”

Yes, you read the title right. Your girl, Adabekee, is going to medical school. I cannot begin to describe the joy I feel even right now, though I have known for two weeks now. I keep going back to my acceptance letter to make sure it actually says my name on it. I eventually got the physical copy in the mail, so I know it isn’t a hoax. Many of you readers have been following me on this journey since I started writing about it, so I felt it would only be right to come back and share my testimony with you all.

Success! You're on the list.

On Friday the 11th, I was getting ready to go grocery shopping with my little sister. She was traveling back to Nigeria for the holidays so we had to pick up last minute items for my mum and dad. To pass time while she was showering, I decided to scroll through social media. Suddenly, I received and email with the heading “School SOM- Congrats!” (School name withheld for personal reasons). I was initially confused cause I didn’t expect to hear back from them so soon. I went into the email and there it was:

My acceptance letter

I immediately started shouting. I ran into the bathroom where my sister was showering screaming, “I got in, I got in!” She said, “Medical school?” To which I responded “Yes!!!!!” We both started screaming. Our friend who was staying over ran into the room and started screaming too. I’m very sure our neighbors thought we were crazy😄😄. I called my mom to tell her and she almost fainted. Infact, she went to offer mass for me the very next day 🙏🏾🙏🏾. My dad, my siblings, my partner, everyone was so ecstatic.

Screaming with my sister when I got in!

I couldn’t believe it. Six years of hardwork had finally yielded fruit. As an international student, going to medical school in the US is an uphill battle. Applying during a pandemic where chaos was the order of the day only made the situation worse. But I am so grateful to have ended 2020 on such a high note. That whole day and even the next, I just kept smiling. When I say nothing could spoil my day ehn.

My tweet on the day!

I am so proud of myself. I currently have one acceptance and I am waiting for most schools to get back to me. But whatever happens, I know that my dream of becoming a physician is going to launch for sure. Thank you all for your support. If you want to read more about my journey as an international re-applicant to medical school, you can do so here, here, and here. Happy New Year ndi nkem. Till next time. K’odi.

On today’s episode, we analyze whether sending your kids to boarding school is worth it. We start by understanding why parents decide to send their kids to boarding school.

LTAI Ep. 5- Parents are the originators of sibling rivalry

On today’s episode, we dig into one of the reasons we have seen for sibling rivalry, which is PARENTS! We feel like knowingly or unknowingly, some parents end up causing rifts between siblings. They do this through comparison, blatant favoritism, and sometimes just pitting siblings against each other.
