This list is in no particular order. I compiled it because I know that there are women in Africa making great strides to bring about gender equality in our continent, and for that they should be appreciated.

1.Theresa Kachindamoto (Malawi)

A female senior chief in the Dedza District of Centeral Malawi, Theresa has used her power and influence to annul over 850 child marriages and has sent these girls back to school to continue their education.2. Chimamanda Ngozi Adiche (Nigeria)

Chimamanda is a renowned author, and has written and spoken about injustices that women face and continue to face in our society. Her book, Half of a Yellow Sun, is one of my favorite books ever.3. Joyce Banda (Malawi)

She served as president of Malawi after taking office in 2012. Some of the work that she did included: fighting for grassroot initiatives, developing opportunities for women and orphans, etc.
4. President Ellen Sirleaf Johnson (Liberia)

She is the 24th president of Liberia and has served as president since 2006. I remember when I was little and people would make remarks about how a woman could not be president. I would always use her as receipts.

5. Wangari Maathai (Kenya)

She was the first African woman and first environmentalist to win the Nobel Peace Prize. I read her memoir Unbowed and I was amazed at all the hurdles she had to jump to stake her claim in the world.

6. Dr. Ada Adevoh (Nigeria)

She was a medical doctor who along with her team, helped control and eventually stop the spread of Ebola in Nigeria. She was the person who recognized the symptoms in Nigeria’s patient zero, and ended up giving her life so that many others would be saved. There is a movie about this called ’93 days.’

I hope to continue adding to this list. I started this post a while ago, but its taken me long to complete. I felt it fitting to complete to being, International Women’s Day. To all the nasty women in our lives, to those who inspire us, and who we inspire, I wish you a Happy International Women’s day.
